Artist's Statement

To avoid the miseries of Latin, my creative journey began with art classes in the 9th grade. Unbeknownst to me, my teacher submitted my abstract tempera to a national competition and it won 3rd Place! Realistic painting in oils as a “Sunday Painter” began in the 60’s with a German artist teacher from whom I learned to mix pigments, prepare and stretch canvases and frame my art. In the 90’s watercolor classes were my focus.  Enamored with the medium, I enrolled in week long workshops for the next 10 years. I experiment with a wide variety of painting styles and materials. For me, art is a life-long journey to explore my creative spirit and learn new methods. A lot of my work is unplanned.  I love painting on yupo paper, a synthetic paper with a “mind of its own”. The only feasible planning is choosing the colors to use. The rest seems up to the paper with a bit of manipulation by me. I accept commissions in oil, watercolor and mixed media. I do not teach as I am committed to spending my free time creating my own art.  My most significant accomplishments are being named Signature Member of the Georgia Watercolor Society and winning Best of Show and a Purchase Award at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, GA, where my painting hangs in their permanent collection, plus a Merit Award at the 2001 Louisiana Watercolor Society’s International Show.   One of my paintings was featured in “International Artist” How Did You Paint That? 100 ways to paint PEOPLE AND FIGURES and several of my works are part of “Experience Art”, published by the Georgia Heritage Association Center for the Arts.
